I was ';diagnosed'; with PCOS when I was 16 years old simply based on the fact that I had irregular periods and my mother and sister have PCOS (confirmed by ultrasound)
I am at an extremely healthy weight, and have no problem with body hair anywhere that it shouldn't be...so my doctor and I have started to question this diagnosis but I am wondering if there are people who have this diagnosis whoare not overweight? Is there anyone who has PCOS but does not have the overweight or facial hair symptoms?
My sister is one of the few. She is a very healthy weight with no facial hair (or other male hair growth) but has PCOS confirmed by ultrasound. Now she doesn't have alot of cysts but enough that she is not ovulating. She is on metformin. I asked my doctor about this since I was having trouble conceiving and thought maybe I had it too and she said it is rare for a women to have PCOS without the typical symptoms but is possible. Hopefully for you, it is not true. 16 is a little early based only on irregular periods. I have them and am not PCOS so we can't all be lumped together I guess! Good luck!Is there anyone who has PCOS but does not have the overweight or facial hair symptoms?
Not myself no - I have pcos and it was because I started putting on weight that lead doc's to test for it when I was 17 (13 yrs ago) but I do know 3 women (aquaintences more then anything) that have pcos and yet to look at them you would never guess they had it in a million years. Perhaps you don't have pcos as is the syndrome, perhaps you just have PCO, meaning you just don't have the syndrome. Considering your mother and sister have pcos I think there's a good chance the first doc was half right, maybe you just have pco, and if that's the case you're lucky to escape the syndrome so far.
Further investigation should be carried out to find out.. Good Luck.
Not everyone who has PCOS has a weight problem. At the same time, PCOS is a complex condition that requires extensive testing to diagnose.
To put this to bed once and for all you really should see a reproductive endocrinologist. REs are specially trained in this area, far beyond regular doctors and OBGYNs. It's worth it for you to get the PROPER tests, diagnoses, and treatment by an expert. Especially if you are wanting to get pregnant anytime soon.
Good luck.
I've had irregular bleeding ever since I started getting periods... the doctor was quick to diagnose me as having PCOS and put me on Metformin which did nothing but make me terribly sick. So I went to seek a SECOND opinion, where they did a zillion tests on me (including a hysterosonogram) and found that I DO NOT HAVE PCOS- but a Polyp in the lining of my uterus. It is always good to get a second opinion.
I am average weight and don't have a problem with facial hair or anything and I was just diagnosed with PCOS but my doctor started looking for other symptoms since I wasn't ovulating and my sister has PCOS .
